Leather Steering Wheel Cleaning

Firstly, did you know that clean leather should have a matt look and feel, rather than shiny?

Leather builds up grease and dirt, embedded in the surface, giving it a shiny look. Especially areas that are in frequent contact with your hands, like your steering wheel!

Luckily with the right tools and cleaners, it's very easy to restore to a fresh matt finish.

We recommend our interior scrub pads, combined with a dedicated leather cleaner. Some general purpose interior cleaners are suitable for leather too, but always check the label to ensure the product is safe on leather and the recommended dilution ratio.*

Or check out our leather cleaning bundle, containing all the products you need to clean and protect various leather surfaces, including leather seats, steering wheels and other interior trim.

1) It's best to start by covering the rest of the dashboard with a microfibre, to avoid splashbacks on other surfaces.

2) Spray your leather cleaner onto the bristled surface of the interior scrub pad.

3) Then gently brush this into the steering wheel, making sure to clean all the way around the wheel, front and back.

4) Wipe away the residue with a general purpose microfibre

You may need to repeat the process a few times, to ensure you fully remove all the contaminants in the leather.

Here you can see the difference - fresh, clean leather on the left and dirty, shiny leather on the right!

Whilst a leather protectant can be used on other leather interior trim, we do not recommend using it on steering wheels, gearsticks and other surfaces in contact with your hands while driving.

The interior scrub pad can be washed ready for use again, just like you would wash your microfibres.

A similar process can be used on other leather surfaces, for example leather seats - here our large interior brushes can be useful as well.

*Always test the interior scrub pad with your chosen leather cleaner on an inconspicuous area first and make sure to follow all guidance in the instructions on the cleaning product.
